Our Friends

ImageFrom the stands of automobiles, she came in with her bag
seeing two frightened animals, black of coat, sensitive of skin
time to civilize them, cut their nails, give a shot, check the teeth.
Cats who spend their days in sleep or at the food dish, suddenly
are handled roughly, poked in private places and their feet,
the most sensitive of all, their feet held and their protection
cut away, leaving them vulnerable.

Forgive them do not harm them. Let them keep the hind claws,
only part of their pride but something of their dignity.
Left later with treats, we are forgiven but I can’t forget
the smell of fear that came from them when I plie
my larger body against theirs. Forgiven of paying
for their plight, they groom us away, eyes hooded
and feet ready to run.
