Ho Ho Ho Hum!

It’s Sunday, the 27th and by now most of the hupala is over for another year. Yesterday was return the gifts and buy the reductions day and today I might go to a movie. The CBS program, Sunday Morning, did their yearly remembrance portion and the nostalgia was comforting. When these people die, there is usually such shock or feelings of our own youth lost, that there isn’t room for just being glad they were with us. Sunday Morning does a good job of telling a bit about them in addition to just noting their names.

The weather in Southern Wisconsin turned cold over the weekend, 13 last night, so all the snow that  didn’t melt in the warm spell (quite a monstrous amount) is still with us. I made some chicken salad this morning with left-overs. Yesterday was the “farm casserole” of extra mashed potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole, chicken and gravy. Much better than it sounds and with a dollop of cranberry sauce, superb!

Norb Blei is teaching again at The Clearing this year after a hiatus of two years. The theme for this year’s writing workshop is “The Writer and the Bigger Picture.” *During the week we will analyze this concept through the works of particular writers, class discussions, and writing assignments. We will consider as well the writer’s obligation to address larger human issues or to concentrate his efforts instead on  personal perspectives, one’s own domain.  Required Reading: NADINE GORDIMER—JUMP and OTHER STORIES   (short stories), CAROLYN FORCHĚ—-THE COUNTRY BETWEEN US   (poetry), TIM O’BRIEN–IN THE LAKE OF THE WOODS   (a novel).  (See  www.theclearing.org)

I’m waiting for my son to return from his workout with my requested Deluxe McDonald’s burger–the one that tastes like a Burger King Whopper. And if that isn’t the ultimate in junk food, I may just eat some fries too!
