Happy Holidays and a Prosperous 2010

If it weren’t for the occasional car on the road, the world would seem deserted and frozen to death. The gaily decorated houses have yet to switch on the lights that will bring breath and movement.

It snows again—the fourth day in a row, after the 17 inches from two weeks ago. The frigid air disallowed any thawing so the scene is as white as a Russian steppe in Doctor Zhivago. The only view missing is the horse-drawn sleigh, carrying fur-clad lovers. The sunless day has made my Christmas spirit fade along with plans for shopping on slippery roads and freezing winds.

The spicy potato soup I made yesterday, has married its vegetable flavor and satisfied my chilled body; the holiday food is waiting in the fridge for the mixing and stirring to bring about baked squash with butter, green bean casserole, roasted asparagus and oven roast beef and mashed potatoes. The radio says snow and freezing rain on the way and are issuing a travel advisory. I’ve seen stranded families waiting at airports and depots; now the roads will also be impassable. In spite of the weather, or because of it, I’m happy to be warm and cozy in my holiday gingerbread house.
